As I write this it’s grey and it’s raining and I’m not mad about it.
Now that it’s September here in the UK I don’t want it to be hot. And I’m more than okay with seeing a grey day over a sunny one.
That’s probably a very unpopular opinion.
With each passing year, the more I appreciate the seasons. Because my parents and grandparents came from a place that doesn’t have seasons as such (well, it’s pretty much either hot/dry or rainy depending on the time of year) I feel like it should be in my DNA to want sun and heat all the time.
But I don’t.
I once met a woman from Brazil who’d moved to Ireland. She said that one of the reasons she settled there and loved it so much was because of how different the weather was there compared to her home country. She liked - no, preferred - the cold. At the time I couldn’t get my head around this, but now, years later, I think I get it.
The seasons feel like friends I learn a bit more about each year that I get to be here. Because they’re never the same each time. And they give me a framework for the year. Each season offers and requires different things.
So, while I’ll miss the longer days of summer and the sensation of the sun warming my skin, I will welcome this new season and on a day like today I’ll smile at the grey sky that I find surprisingly comforting. (That’s something I thought I’d never say!)
