How often do you unconsciously breathe through your mouth?

Humans take in the region of 20,000 breaths a day, but how many of those are conscious nasal breaths?

We can all find that when we’re stressed we end up breathing through the mouth without realising. But constant mouth breathing can be detrimental and lead to issues like gum disease and halitosis.

In contrast, research suggests that nasal breathing has numerous benefits including improved cognitive processing and therefore faster response times.

Nitric oxide is produced in the nose. This aids your lungs in absorbing oxygen and passing it through your body. This also supports your immune system in fighting infections.

With this is mind, this month’s edition of A Peaceful Pause is a short breathing practice to encourage you to utilise your natural filtration system - your nose!
